The Force Engine will attempt to auto-detect your installations, in which case you can get started immediately. If you do not own the game, it is currently available at the GOG and Steam digital storefronts. The first step to using The Force Engine is to purchase and/or install Dark Forces. You will find references to Outlaws in the TFE UI - such as the game data source. The current version of The Force Engine does not yet support Outlaws, that it is planned for version 2.0. There are near-term plans to add DirectX 10/11, Vulkan, and maybe Metal render backends which should enable more GPUs to run the engine efficiently. For now only OpenGL is supported, which might limit the use of some older Intel integrated GPUs that would otherwise be capable. However, the minimum requirements for GPU Renderer support are here to stay. Note that there are plans to lower the requirements for using the classic software renderer in the future. A portable installation option, where all data is kept in the local directory, is planned for the future. Note that TFE stores saves, set up info, screenshots, log files, and similar items under Documents/TheForceEngine/. ![]() Then simply run TheForceEngine.exe and if you have Dark Forces installed using GOG or Steam it should automatically find it. You can place mod zip files or directories into the Mods/ within the TFE directory. To “install” The Force Engine, unzip the archive into its own directory, such as C:/Games/TFE/.
